Overview

This update introduces a number of new features, brings new functionalities to the Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 product line and addresses issues found in previous releases.

To update Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 components while preserving all previous settings, tasks, policies and vaults, it is recommended to install the update build without uninstalling the previous build.

Components can be updated in any order as the product provides version compatibility between components.

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 update is available for all editions. For a complete list of editions visit our site.

Note for Virtual Edition users:

To update from build 11345 to build 11639, you have to remove virtual appliances and deploy new ones, particularly because of the addition of cluster support. (See below the outline of the update procedure.) After that, you will be able to perform updates from the management server in the same way as deployment.

To update Agent for ESX/ESXi Virtual Appliance:
Update the management server.
Remove the virtual appliance from the management server.
Delete the virtual appliance from its host.
Revoke the license used by the agent.
Deploy the agent anew from the management server (one agent per cluster).
Reapply backup policies if required.

More details of the update procedure can be found in the product help system and the Virtual Edition Installation Guide (search for "Updating ESX/ESXi Virtual Appliance", see "Manual update" in this section).
New features

Acronis Smart Error Reporting

Each error message in the product now shows a link to the Acronis Knowledge Base Web page that contains possible solutions to fix the error, or to a general Knowledge Base page where the user can search for a solution manually if there is no article for this particular error yet.

The Smart Error Reporting article base will be filled gradually while Acronis collects statistics on commonly encountered errors.

Acronis Customer Experience Program

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 automatically gathers product usage statistics from our customers machines who agree to provide this information. This helps Acronis to collect the information on possible infrastructure types, hardware used by customers and different types of errors users may receive, accumulate this information, analyze it and make the product better.

VMware Ready certification

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 is now certified for "VMware Ready Data Protection" program This means that the product was tested and approved by VMware as being compliant with its virtual infrastructure. The following features were introduced:
Support for ESX/ESXi clusters: a single Agent for ESX/ESXi Virtual Appliance can back up all clustered virtual machines, including support for vMotion, DRS and migration
Agent for ESX/ESXi Virtual Appliance does not have its own login/password, but authenticates against the ESX(i) host or vCenter it manages
Parallel deployment of Agent for ESX/ESXi to multiple ESX(i) hosts. Previously agents were deployed one after another

Updated and enhanced installer
Added the ability to copy and paste license keys when installing Acronis License Server or other components
Added the option to uninstall the product from the Start menu
Added the ability for Web installer to save the MSI files it has already downloaded, so that next time there is no need to download them again
Redesigned the components selection page
Redesigned the accounts page, providing more information on account usage
Installer now warns if certain applications are locking the files which need to be overwritten during installation or update
The vCenter Integration component is now included in the Acronis Management Server (and hence is not present in the installer as a separate component)

WinPE 3.0 support added
Now it is possible to create WinPE 3.0 bootable media using Acronis Bootable Media Builder.
Fixed issues and enhancements

This section lists the issues found in previous releases of Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 that were fixed in the current update.

Installation
Agent for Windows now can be installed without Distributed Transaction Coordinator.
It is now possible to specify in the Remote Installation wizard the user account under which Agent for Windows will run.

Backup
Improved performance for browsing archives with nested folders
Backup to a mapped drive does not require the user to be logged on
Iomega Rev Drives are now supported as a backup destination
Fixed backup in Windows Server 2008 with the Create snapshots using VSS option
Fixed cleaning up of the archive when there is insufficient space while backing up
Fixed backup under the BartPE media
Pre/post commands fixed for the case when they run in parallel with backup
The cleanup task progress is fixed
Fixed file exclusions when creating backup from Acronis bootable media

Recovery
Acronis Universal Restore is now available when restoring an entire disk under bootable media
Fixed recovery from incremental/differential backups of network folders

Centralized management
The management server now uses the correct IP address to connect to an agent if an agent's IP address was changed
Synchronization between the management server and the agents now works even without DNS
The indexing task now restarts automatically if the storage node is restarted
Fixed the issue when consolidation of an encrypted disk backup stored on a storage node corrupted the archive
Fixed the storage node crash when exporting an archive from a deduplicated vault with the /include_pits:0 option of StorageNodeCmd.exe

Linux
Fixed backup in RHEL 5.4 to the tape library
Fixed installation in Linux Red Hat 3 with smp kernel
Known issues

This section describes issues that are currently known and provides workarounds or advice on how to avoid the issues.
When updating to the new build using Group Policy, you need to create a new Group Policy Object (GPO) instead of using the "redeploy" option for the GPO created for installations of previous versions.
When upgrading Acronis True Image Echo Backup Server build earlier than 8163 to Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Storage Node, it is recommended that the Acronis Backup Server service is stopped during the upgrade, otherwise the locations may not be imported correctly.
When updating an Acronis agent, a reboot may be required.
In some cases during remote installation of Acronis agent a reboot may be required. In that case a dialog box with the following message will appear: "Remote installation on machine has successfully completed." By clicking Yes you will reboot those machines where a reboot is required.

Information for Virtual Edition users:

Backup of all virtual machines of a cluster with a single Agent for ESX/ESXi may take a significant amount of time. If length of the backup window is important, try the following workaround.
Deploy Agent for ESX/ESXi to each clustered host instead of deploying a single agent to the cluster. You can do so from the management server. Just right-click the Virtual machines item instead of the vCenter group.
If VMware DRS is enabled in the cluster, disable automatic migration of Agent for ESX/ESXi Virtual Appliances. You also should not migrate them manually to different hosts, in order to avoid the situation when an agent manages a host other than its own. Backup and recovery performance would considerably degrade in that case.
Create a dynamic group of virtual machines hosted on the clustered hosts. Use the Host/VA criterion for the group.
Create a backup policy and apply the policy to the dynamic group. Once a virtual machine migrates to a different host, the management server will deploy a backup task for this machine to the agent that manages that host.
